Emergency Medical Services

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program at Mt. San Jacinto College is a one-semester, non-transfer course designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to provide emergency care for ill or injured individuals. Ideal for those pursuing careers in fire or ambulance services or as emergency department technicians, the program prepares students to sit for the National Emergency Medical Technician certification exam, a critical step for employment in the field. Students will gain hands-on experience through hospital clinicals, ambulance ride-alongs, and field internships, learning to manage emergency scenarios such as hypoxia, medication administration, and traffic collision responses. Emphasis is placed on professional ethics, patient respect, and safe scene practices. Approved by Riverside County and the California Emergency Medical Services Authority, the program is offered at the San Jacinto Campus and requires students to meet age and background qualifications to enroll.

FOR APPLICANTS: INCLUDE ALL PROGRAM NOTES FROM COUNSELOR- This also has your GPA listed. Applications will not be complete without this document! Early applications WILL NOT be accepted.

The 2 points per application year are ONLY awarded for complete applications.

Immunizations upon acceptance

Upon acceptance - not application - EMS students will be required to have proof of specific vaccinations to enter clinical facilities. Please make sure to identify the program immunizations from nursingandah@msjc.edu and provide them once completed.

How to Submit Application and Documents

Applications may be submitted through either of these methods:

  • Scanned and emailed to the nursingandah@msjc.edu email address.
    • Please Note: Documents MUST be in PDF or JPEG format
    • MUST include subject line: FA2025 EMS Application

OR

  • Downloaded, printed and delivered to the Nursing and Allied Health Department during regular business hours. Applications MUST be in a sealed envelope.
    • Hours: Mondays - Thursdays 8:00AM – 5:00PM

 

We will only accept one submission per student, per program, per application period.  Any subsequent submissions during a single application period will not be considered part of your application.

NOTE: The Student Health Center is able to help our Nursing & Allied Health students with appointment for Physical Exams (including immunization review or order lab work), TB test, and Drug Screening. These workshops are designed for all students interested in the Mt. San Jacinto College Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program.  All general information relative to the MSJC EMT Program will be discussed. At the end of the workshop, the presenter will be able to answer any questions that you may have.

No appointment is necessary to attend the workshop! Please log on 5-10 minutes prior to the scheduled workshop!

Open to the public: You do not have to be currently enrolled at MSJC to attend this workshop.

Program Description

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is a one semester, non-transfer course provides the student with the knowledge and skills to care for the ill or injured person in Emergency settings. This course is taken to help the student prepare for working with fire service or ambulance service. It is also a first step for those individuals who would prefer to work in a hospital emergency department as an emergency department technician. Completion of this course qualifies the student to sit for the National Registry certification exam which is a required certification for Fire Service or Ambulance service work. Hospital clinical, ambulance, and/or squad ride-along required.

EMS course is now located in the San Jacinto Campus.

Individuals who wish to take this course must have a criminal free background due to licensing restrictions imposed by national, state and local licensing agencies. The potential student must be 18 years of age before starting required clinical/field internship hours. This course is a positive attendance course due to national, state and local mandates.

Program Requirements - to be completed AFTER being accepted into the program and receiving your program acceptance packet.


Program requirements found in the acceptance packet include the following

  1. American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Certification (CPR Card) - Offered by the MSJC Student Health Center
  2. Medical Examination - Through your Primary Care Physician or at the Student Health Center 
  3. Proof of the following Immunizations AFTER having titers (lab) drawn:
    • COVID-19 - recommended, no longer required
    • MMR (Get a titer (lab) drawn first before getting the vaccine)
    • Varicella (Get a titer (lab) drawn first before getting the vaccine)
    • HepB (Get a titer (lab) drawn first before getting the vaccine)
    • Tdap
    • Flu
    • TB (2 Step-Mantoux Skin Test or TB QuantiFERON Gold - blood test)
  4. Certified Background Check through CastleBranch
  5. Certificate of Liability Insurance through HPSO
  6. Drug test (available at Student Health Center)

 

Program Enrollment Process


  1. Must have an MSJC student ID number.  Apply for admissions here.

  2. Download Preregistration Application Packet and fill it out.  

  3. Please scan all documents as one file and submit to the "Submit Documents Here" button.  Note: You can use your phone if you do not have access to a scanner.  Use the free application Adobe Scan and save the document as a PDF.


Program Goals

  • Use clinical reasoning when verbalizing and demonstrating the proper techniques used when ventilating an adult manikin.
  • Pass the National Emergency Medical Technician exam.
  • Explain and demonstrate how to use all the medications that are in the EMT scope of practice.
  • Synthesize and explain the physiological effects of hypoxia on both the molecular and cellular level in a patient that presents with hypoxia.
  • Analyze and employ safe scene practices while working at the scene of a traffic collision on the freeway.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and respect for all patients, coworkers, bystanders and assisting agencies in the performance of their duty as cited in the National Emergency Medical Technician code of ethics and behavior.
