MSJC Celebrates graduating and transferring LGBTQIA+ students at its Inaugural Lavender Celebration
Mt. San Jacinto College's LGBTQIA+ Taskforce celebrated seven graduating and transfer students at its Inaugural Lavender Celebration on May 5, 2023, at its San Jacinto Campus. Lavender graduations offer space to honor the achievements of LGBTQIA+ students.
The keynote address was given by California State Assemblymember Dr. Corey A. Jackson, who is the first openly gay black man in the history of the state assembly, and represents the 60th Assembly District including Perris, San Jacinto and parts of Moreno Valley and surrounding areas. LGBTQIA+ Taskforce co-chairs Ryan Sullivan and Jenner Pickens provided opening and closing remarks.
The president of the MSJC Board of Trustees, Joshua Rivera, also spoke at the event. A video recorded message by Dr. Roger Schultz, Superintendent/President affirming the LGBTQ+ Resolution and Commitment by the MSJC Board of Trustees was played for attendees. The students who participated were given the opportunity to speak briefly and thanked their support networks before receiving a ceremonial certificate, patch and stole. Refreshments were provided and students and their guests enjoyed a reception after the ceremony.
